Author Guidelines

Guidelines for oral presentations

  • - All presenters will have access to standard audiovisual equipment, including a screen, speakers, a laser pointer, and a slide remote.
  • - Mott and Plenary talks are allocated 40 minutes including questions.
  • - Invited talks are allocated 30 minutes including questions.
  • - Contributing talks are allocated 20 minutes including questions.
  • - We request that you upload your presentation to the conference system via your dashboard in .ppt, .pptx, or .pdf format 24 hours in advance of your session. You can test it on your room’s audiovisual equipment in the break before your session.
  • - Correspondingly, any nonsystem fonts should be embedded into your presentation file (on PowerPoint, for example, follow file > options > save and check the ‘embed fonts in file’ box).
  • - Similarly, media files should be embedded into presentations rather than streamed from online sources.
  • - Presentation files will be neither stored after the end of the conference nor shared.
  • - You can present from your own device if necessary. In this case, only an HDMI cable will be provided; you will be responsible for bringing any adaptors you might need.
  • - Use an aspect ratio of 16:9 (i.e., widescreen) for your presentation to make full use of the provided screen.
  • - For legibility, body text should generally be set in a font size of at least 24 pt and high-contrast colours (e.g., black text on a white background) and arranged in columns that allow for a line length of 60–90 characters (including spaces).
  • - Graphics should be embedded in high resolution.

Guidelines for poster presentations

  • - Posters must be no larger than A0 (84.1 cm × 118.9 cm; 33.1″ × 46.8″) and displayed in portrait orientation.
  • - For legibility, body text should generally be set in a font size of at least 24 pt and high-contrast colours (e.g., black text on a white background) and arranged in columns that allow for a line length of 60–90 characters (including spaces).
  • - Graphics should be embedded and printed in high resolution (minimum 300 dpi).
  • - Be aware that we do not offer printing facilities. If you wish to have your poster printed in Manchester, we recommend MUPrint and Minuteman Press.
